Genstar >> Golden Gate >>>>>>> HIG. Genstar is crushing it. Can't speak to the culture directly but have heard from others that it's good. Pay up for quality assets. Pretty good placement into b school. Golden Gate places pretty well into GSB/HBS but has had an insane amount of churn. So many partners have left over the years to start their own funds. Seems like a tough place to work. HIG has had solid returns but is known for being incredibly cheap (underpaying for assets and its junior employees). Know multiple people who worked there (only one in SF) who hated it. Can't think of a less appealing "higher profile" firm to work for.
