Getting Poached
I left a 2yr associate program after 2.5 years to go to another MF in effectively another 2 yr program (get sr associate next year then tbd but guided to no path to vp for headcount reasons when I joined). My old boss moved firms and asked if I want to join him - I’ve been at this place for 4 months but opportunity is sr associate now vp in 1-2 yrs. Any advice ?

What's the size and caliber of your boss' new firm?
UMM, stable firm
Uuuuh take it
No brainer
Agree, definitely take the new gig and given you were at this interim firm so briefly, just burn the bridge then drop it from your resume and LinkedIn.
My concern is 3 funds as an associate looks bad
But VP looks a ton better than not VP. Take it
Agree but the 2nd stint was so short that I think it’s reasonable to totally skip over it unless pushed.
If you just put years on your resume (versus month + year), you wouldn’t even have a gap.
Don’t put it on your resume or LinkedIn.

I’d have a pretty direct conversation with him about your path to promotion. / career growth. If he’s willing to give you assurances that you believe, then this is a no brainer. Just remove it from your LinkedIn / resume.
Also a good signal your old boss asked you to join him. If you have to explain why the short stint, you can say you were poached, great opportunity to work with someone you like and respect etc etc.
Obviously works better if you stay at the next place for a while.
Has your old boss been at the new firm long enough so you can be reasonably sure it is working out? Tough to ask directly. This is where it would actually be helpful to have interview rounds at the new place so you get a feel from the colleagues.
Take it, no brainer. Then pls DM me whats your current MF
He starts in December because Garden Leave. Figured I’d just stay here for a while then move over when he does he I get about a year here.
Take it, no brainer. Then pls DM me whats your current MF
