How best to prepare for PE Case Study in a sub sector I have no experience in?

Hi everyone,

I’m doing a lot of reading and studying for PE case study in advance hoping I’ll be ready by the time I do get one. I have read the WSO guide in great detail and have read other relevant case study materials online. I’m comfortable with my modelling and other technical elements such as capital structure, etc. However, I’m really concerned about investment thesis and investment highlights if it’s in a sub sector I have no experience in whatsoever. To give some context, I’m interviewing infra funds but I come from non-infra background (but I’m in sector where infra funds hire from regularly). So naturally I have no experience in infra but I have basic understanding and knowledge of each infra sub sector.

What should be the things to focus on outside of numbers? I’m thinking if I was given 48 hours to complete a model and presentation recommending if I should invest, obviously knowing about the company is key and I’m thinking outside of company filings, brokers report (if they are public) would be the first thing. This would be much easier if there is more time but when there is time constraint, I would appreciate some advice on what is the most efficient way to analyse an investment in a sub sector you know nothing about?

Thank you!
