Rarely, since PE has somewhat more control over hours / you'd be giving up a lot of carry to go back to IB, especially for seniors. PE MDs don't want to go be a dancing IB monkey when they are used to being danced for.

But I've seen it done and it's usually not very difficult. Often it's ASOs who do a year or so, don't like it for whatever reason and go back to their old group or something similar

I meant how often do associates & above go from IB --> PE. I worded it poorly at first.

Any thoughts?

Very easy to go from PE into IB at either your old group or a similar group, but not very common for a variety of factors. Generally cases of people staying in the same coverage group. Have had multiple offers to do so as an associate and senior associate, and know few friends that didn't get the promotion that went to IB. The door remains very open if you do a 2 year associate stint to go back as an assoicate 2 or 3 in IB (whether you lose a year or not depends on the firm). If your a Senior Associate in PE,  you'd go back as a VP in IB though that is much less common.
