How important is a reference from your employer for post-HSW recruiting?
If my reference is just fine (like the guy, good investment judgment, works hard, but bad at modeling and accounting) am I toast / should I find another career?

Wtf why would anybody give a shit if your reference is good at accounting. They’re just making sure you’re a decent guy and not a fuck up with a reference call…
If you recruit OCR they won't even ask for references
Edit: Purely anecdotal but that's what happened for me at LMM/MM shops. May be different at the upper end of the range where it is a smaller world, but did not happen at the lower end.
