Is an MBA an absolute prereq to progress in PE in US?
I have heard different views, that nowadays many US funds don’t require MBA to progress through the ranks, even some mega funds seem to be changing attitude towards MBA. Is it still an absolute prerequisite in your view?
It's really not. The only reason you would get an MBA at this point for private equity, is if you couldn't go through traditional IB or right after college. And even that might change.
I will be starting in PE in Europe, but hoping to transfer internally to the US office in a few years time. My understanding was that to reach a principal level you have to go back to Business school, but seems like it’s not the case any more!
I don't know where you are from originally but it is becoming less and less important in the U.S. The real benefit of an MBA is the network you get as a result of it. But now we have the internet and people who know how to use email so it's somewhat easier. I can't guarantee it but most people in the industry I have spoke with have said it's not going to be necessary.
This is patent false. The vast majority of associates don’t get promoted (10-20% do?). Some decide to leave some try and lateral some go to hfs. A good chunk, ~30%? Or about 400 each year based on b school incoming class data go to b school and try to rerecruit with maybe 50-75% succeeding based on outgoing class data. Therefore It is still the most common path to progression.
