I work in commercial real estate and we have a website called CoStar that has tons of data on comps. I know real estate tends to be more transparent than corporate private equity. Is there any sort of database that has sale info? Or is my best bet to go straight to the brokers for information?

Real estate has to be publicly reported for tax and zoning purposes. There really is no public interest in the value of a company. Info for cap gains will be reported to the IRS etc., but our tax statements are not publicly available, unless you’re a non-profit. So for a private company if not on MergerMarket, 451, CapIQ, FactSet, Pitchbook etc. - you’re best chance is to go the brokers (they probably won’t tell you though, unless they have some commercial benefit to giving you a multiple etc.).
