Joining a PortCo
I am joining a UMM PE shop this summer with a culture of two and out. I am very interested in pursuing the portco BD / chief of staff route after PE. Does anyone have experience on how to transition from PE to portco?
- When should I bring up my interest in transitioning? Are PE firms generally supportive and open to discussing this or should you keep it on the down-low?
- Is it necessary to be staffed on the deal team for the portco you want to join?
- Similarly, I've done some research on the existing portcos and have a strong interest in 1-2 of them. Should I try to get on these portcos once I start?
Thanks all.

I didn't work in PE prior to the portco I'm at now, but several people from our sponsor have joined the firm. One I know of wasn't involved in the deal but she wanted operational experience and expressed interest in this particular company and was later hired on as a psuedo chief of staff. The other worked on the deal and decided to jump in to be more involved in the day to day as we were experiencing some distress with our data, financial metrics and other issues but also wanted to leave the PE world. It seemed that the sponsor was very open and encouraging of them making the jump to our company. Hope that helps a little!
