would love to hear any insights at all that anyone has. also, would you be locked into O&G forever if you start your career here? what’s the mobility like?

Would not recommend if you want to be in non-energy NYC within a few years. it's hard enough to move from energy IB. Internal mobility at a MF is alwas very hard and becomes basically unheard of when you add in going from a less desirable location/coverage and being a junior
so would you take an NYC BB ibd gig over that, generally speaking?
Personally I would take the BB job, but depends what is most important to you. Do you like the MF brand and don't mind doing O&G/TX, or do you want to be in NYC/not in energy, and don't mind doing oncycle to find your PE spot (potentially not landing MF)
No wrong answer. Just would not go for KKR thinking you'd have an easy path to their NYC funds.
So I’m not super familiar with KKR Houston specifically but I wouldn’t write it off completely. I know a decent number of people who have gone from energy banking at places like GS/MS or large cap energy PE into a variety of non-energy investing roles. The brand name helps a lot and you can’t get much better than KKR.
