LA vs. NY money wise
I'm a hs student in Cali. I want to work in IB and maybe PE but I have trouble deciding where I want to go to school. I love Cali but I'm wondering if I would make more money in NY than in LA. (I've decided money doesn't follow me so I'm gonna have to follow it). I have a feeling it will be NY but I'm not sure what top schools I should apply to if that's the case. If it's not and I get to stay in LA, I'm going with the USC route. Thanks in advance.
This feels more like a “Which school to attend?” more than a PE question. Maybe you should post this in the IB forum and ask which school places the best into IB.
Anyway, I am not US educated but I worked for a couple of years in NY IB BB so I’ll tell you what I saw. I saw more people in banking coming from NYU and Columbia, with few people from USC and UC at Berkeley. Not many from other Californian universities (maybe someone from UCLA and someone from Claremont. This is also partially self selected (i.e. people who studied in NY stay in NY, some people who studied in LA may stay in LA). To cut it short, I think you should go to the best school you can get that places well into banking. If you are dead set on NY vs LA, I’d take Columbia > NYU > USC, unless you find out that USC places pretty much everyone they want into NYC IB or SF IB.
