Let go after few months in PE

I was recently let go from a PE associate role after a few months. Officially it was performance-related, but in reality I had some family issues that affected my focus during that period.

I'm trying to figure out the best path forward and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation. Specifically on:

  • How did you explain a short stint in PE during interviews? Did you frame it as performance related?
  • Has anyone successfully returned to PE after being let go early in a role? Otherwise where did one end up in? IB / Credit / Secondaries / Corp. Dev?
  • How long did it take to secure your next role?
