Looking for advice on how to prepare for a future career in PE.
I am currently a 4th year analyst a boutique hedge fund. The majority of my job is back office (not entirely what I was expecting when I signed on). But I have had the opportunity to do some investment research (DCF modeling, pitching to investment team, etc.). I also function as the funds primary investor relations contact. Not an ideal role. I went to a top 10 university for undergrad with a Math and Econ Major. I have passed CFA level 1.
I will be attending a top 7 B School in the fall. My question is what can I do to best prepare for a career in PE? I have a family friend who has asked me several times to come work for his small PE shop ($1B). I also am very close to the heads of two larger shops ($9B and $75B). I intend to use this to secure a post MBA associate job after finishing B School. I don't take that opportunity lightly and what to be qualified and deserving of such a role (I realize I may not be)
What can I do in the next 2.5 years to best position myself to be qualified for jobs at these firms? Thanks in advance for any help and sorry if this post comes across as douchey. I realize I am super fortunate to be in this position.
