Need advice

I am a principal at a lower mid market fund located in the U.S. but I live in Canada. We have a good name in the industry but our returns are very average. I work with nice people but they're not very energized to raise a lot of money. My employer has set up a legal entity in Canada with the idea to transfer myself and my wife to the U.S. under an L Visa and immediately petition me for a green card - realistically I could have this all done in 14 months.

Now my question, my pay is rubbish and I don't think our fundraise is going to go too well given the mediocre track record so I think the best I can get out of this situation is to move to the U.S. via my employer as there are more opportunities. My two questions:

  1. Where should I move to in the U.S? I love the sun of California but not sure if there are that many opportunities there.

  2. How can I make the most of my time while at my current firm to set myself up for success for when I eventually leave?

Thanks!

2.
