Need advice on how to find good companies to invest

I just started my internship at a relatively new private equity fund and I was given a task to identify good companies that have not raised VC/PE funds in the past. Ideally the companies should be profitable and growing, and not more than 15M in EBITDA. I just realized how hard it is to research small, private companies like this and I simply can't find the information I needed online.
I would really appreciate it if someone could provide some advice regarding how I should proceed my research. Any good tools/websites, etc. Thank you very much.

If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. Assuming your firm is legit, it should have access to databases that will allow you to find out that type of information (e.g. CapIQ). I work more on the other side of the table, but I would start with areas the fund is trying to target.

Even if it is a generalist, the GPs should have an inkling as to what areas they believe to be good values going forward. It should be more specific than just industrials (i.e. HVAC distributors in the Northwest).
