Outsourcing Heavy PortCo. Modelling Work
What are some tools/resources (excluding new hires) that people have utilized to integrate budgeting, actuals, and long-term projections (e.g., detailed, modelling work)?
- We are in an asset-heavy, volatile industry with multiple vertically integrated businesses (think services + real estate + commodity exposure)
- We did several bolt-on acquisitions with companies that have worse-than-average financial reporting & talent support
- There is some serious "restructuring" work required across our entire, newly built platform
- I say restructuring in quotes because it's not so much a leverage issue, although elements of it do exist
- It's an "asset positioning" exercise; e.g. pay down debt here, sell this, keep that, reinvest here, etc...
- But take regular portfolio management (which is kind of what this is), and multiply it by 1,000x due to multiple lenders (with real estate collateral), minority investors, and complex earn-outs on limited timelines
- Bandwidth is severely limited, and there will be no new hires (even if we had them, the time to on-board and fully learn the business/process would not matter at this stage)
- We need to present a (seemingly infinite) number of scenarios on the fly, and manage cash incredibly efficiently on a month-to-month basis
- Of course, I can slave away hundred hour weeks to put together the 80-20% answer, which is what will most likely happen in the near-term.
- But in the long-term, this is not sustainable; people are leaving our firm like flies due to the complexity/low bandwidth of our deals. I would like to spend money/resources (excluding new hires) to simplify this PM process going forward.
This is pretty high-skill, high-intensity work and I'm not convinced you can easily outsource this. India and other traditional outsourcing is for low-skill work, I'm sure there is some star modeler out there but it'll be finding a needle in a haystack. At minimum you'd spend a massive amount of time checking the work. Anyone who has enough skill to do this competently will have spent time at a bank and probably not available for one-off work.
Only thing I can think of would be to hire a "consultant", likely on an hourly or per-output basis. Maybe someone on here who's ex-RX IB and not subject to outside business activity issues. But it's going to be costly AF, especially if you need quick turnarounds.
Sounds interesting. In an asset-heavy industry myself with significant modeling work day-to-day. Background in distress / complex debt deals. PM me
