PE Associate Lateral to NYC from T2/3 City

How easy is it to lateral after 1 year from a tier 2/3 city (Miami, Charlotte, Nashville, Dallas, etc) to NYC as an associate at a ~$1B fund? This is assuming you did your IB analyst years at a reputable MM/EB/BB in NYC. Just want to gauge if it's worth taking a role elsewhere to break into PE.
