Pre-MBA PE recruiting for unconventional candidates

What are strategies for unconventional junior candidates (i.e. non-IBD or M/B/B) with HYPS/W undergrad background to gain interviews at both megafund and MM private equity firms for pre-MBA associate positions, when they don't necessarily get emails everyday from headhunters? Do cold calls/emails work if you truly have amazing experience that is unconventional, but might actually be an attractive asset to a PE firm relative to bankers/consultants? I do understand that for junior positions, firms may want conventional candidates who tow the line.

i.e. for successful young entrepreneurs, analysts in F100 corporate development groups or top-5 finance rotation programs? Candidates with solid industry expertise and/or strong financial modeling skills (albeit not LBO modeling).

Reach out and network with Headhunters. There are several lists on WSO that show you exactly which companies are trustworthy and can actually help you. I don't know your geography but I believe PE recruiting has started already.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

Curious about the same thing. Currently in a F500 corporate development group as an analyst, and really like the job. Came from a lower tier MM bank, industry group. Good undergrad business school, crappy GPA, networked my butt off and had good internships (BB PWM, BB S&T).

I would like to do PE at some point, but am having trouble choosing my path. I've had a few PE associates tell me at some more operationally focused firms they will take analysts with non-IB backgrounds, but when I check the profiles of their associates, they almost all come from BB firms.

Do I really have a chance at a PE role after 2-3 years in my role? Or would I be better off going to a boutique / BB after a year or so in my current role, and hoping for PE after a non-traditional analyst stint?

coming from a small boutique, we have alumni that are associates/senior associates/VP's at MM PE shops -- what would be a good time to start networking for post IBD, pre-mba positions?
