I recently interviewed with a PE shop After having met three people there they told me I had been short listed and asked for references to call. I submitted three names with contact details.
Does anyone here know how long this kind of reference check usually takes?

It all depends on the recruiting timeline. If they are in a rush, they will call the references ASAP. If you're one of many candidates, it may take a week. If they aren't very serious about you, but wanted to keep you on ice for awhile, they may wait a couple of weeks. I really wouldn't read it too much, it's out of your control.
