Should I share carry #s with my peer (details inside)
I joined a big firm with many teams as a VP. So did a professional peer of mine and he negotiated his offer a month before me, but I then started way before him. He told me his carry package going in, which actually helped me negotiate a big bump at signing.
Not long into the role they doubled my carry which they told both of us was impossible on the front end.
I want to tell my acquaintance so he knows it’s possible but I don’t want to make him feel like shit if he doesn’t get it or stew animosity.
Should I?
Bump
dont
Definitely don't. They have chosen to increase yours, there's no benefit to telling him except your firm will probably be a bit pissed at you
I actually think the calculus isn’t so cut and dry. How much do you like this person, do they seem like a “good person,” do you see yourself knowing and interacting with them (whether at your firm or elsewhere)?
IMO, in this world of fake ass bullshit, sharp elbowed finance assholes and office politicking pieces of shit, it’s extremely refreshing to have real peer allies who can be candid and trustworthy, especially at this stage in career/life.
If you don’t care about them, don’t really like them, etc, then leave it. If you guys are friendly, you like them, you can see yourself being friends or continuing to work together/have some sort of relationship going forward, and can trust them to be discreet, it COULD be worth it. I think normal well-adjusted people remember stuff like this down the line even if marginally. Plus, in 10-20 years you’ll both be senior enough where it could actually be beneficial, who knows? All I know is, if a peer came and told me this info in a way that’s framed as “having my back,” I’d be very grateful and it would immediately build additional rapport.
Never share #s like that. It's the prime example of a negative free roll - no upside, only possible downside, best case is breakeven.
Return the favor.
I mean he helped you negotiate your stuff, but it does have negative skew in R/R
