Start PE early versus finishing second year analyst stint

Hi everyone,

Would you finish your second year analyst stint or start your pe stint 5 months early?PE firm will pro-rate bonus and not pay 100% out.

Looking at starting in March. Will not take a break in between.

Thanks!

If you are trying to run from IB - I wouldn't. Try to take the time to focus in on yourself and enjoying the journey irrespective of any outcome and not looking to far forward into the future. Your last months your staffer will probably try to get work out of you, but you will also be able to take things often a little easier. Hopefully you enjoy your analyst class and can look fondly on these days in a year and be happy you left with stronger relationships.

If you are running to PE - because you are so excited its harder decision. Know that there are a lot of things that will make it banking 2.0. But the buyside is fun, and I enjoy it a lot more. If you stay on in your IB role, can you use your remaining vacation days to stay and take a break before you start in PE? You'll probably be thankful for that time. But your PE bonus may be safer than your IB bonus as it is likely paid out of management fees (contracted revenue) and not deal fees like in IB.

Ultimately its what you care about most. Try to leave your banking group on the best footing, easiest way to do this is to not leave early. Even if you don't want it now it may be a bridge you want in the future. But also know that if you are very confident that this PE firm is where you want to spend the next 30 years and you are extremely looking forward to it - as long as you won't regret the money its something to think about - everything small in this industry adds up to goodwill over time.

Start PE - your banking bonus won't be anything special.
