Transition from R&D/Product Management to IB or Private Equity

I have over 6 YOE at a Fortune 50 logistics company. I don't see any good long term promotion prospects but I am very interested in the finance world including stocks, investment banking, and private equity. My background is engineering and robotics but I work on emerging technologies at my company. I have no idea where to start with breaking into private equity. Does anyone have any advice on where to start?
