Transitioning to corp dev / strategy / IR

Does the door to corp dev / strategy / IR roles ever fully close to people coming from banking / PE / hedge funds and if so, when?

For example, if I'm a mid-level at a PE fund, the tension seems to be you're too senior to apply to entry-level strategy roles but too junior for senior strategy roles. So is there an age when you're too old to make the transition?

Does it make a difference if you're coming from HF / equity research instead?
