Which background will help me in the long run?

I know that I would like to go into private equity but am not sure which path will help me best.

I have been offered a summer internship at an energy focused PE shop and a boutique investment bank within their M&A group. Both of these internships don't necessarily guarantee employment after graduating as an undergrad. My current thought is that the PE internship will get me in the door faster but it may prevent me from moving up the "ladder" because I haven't gone through the traditional banking stint. The investment banking internship, although not directly related to PE, will give me the opportunity to have done it and possibly give me better exit ops if I ever decide PE is not for me.

What are your thoughts?
