Worst Performer in PE Training Class

Hi all,

I recently joined a MF PE shop in and just completed the official training program and was ranked as the lowest incoming Associate (out of a class of 10). Over the few weeks of training, I was very clearly struggling the most and felt like my banking job did not prepare me at all for Private Equity in any respect.

Most of the training was modeling related and I was definitely slower than most to build out the concepts but I genuinely tried as hard as I could.

My questions are i) is there a clear road back to succeeding at this current MF PE shop? I feel like my first impression has been tarnished as the list of ranked Associates is sent out to the firm.

ii) How do I begin to recover and find success in this role? I haven't really had a heart to heart with anyone or found any mentor here yet but feel like that's the key.

Any advice / perspectives / stories would be helpful!

This is a tough situation. Not necessarily advice for how to "bounce back" per se, but would just encourage you to remember that you were hired for a reason and if you trust the senior IPs to make investment decisions, you should also have faith in their decision to hire you.

I also don't think there is a single metric that can define or predict the success of an Associate (i.e., I don't think the best associate is always the one who can build out the most complex model). Work hard, communicate effectively, and double/ triple check all your work. While there are sprints in PE, most of the deadlines aren't truly end-all-be-all. Take your time and ensure the work is accurate. Better to be slightly late and accurate than on time and wrong.

they do a similar thing in my hs where they publish our marks and post it at the front of our class. think it is for motivation
