Apollo Opportunistic Credit Group

Any insight into this team. Know a partner there fairly well who I’ve done several deals with (quoted whole loans and bifurcated a senior mortgage loan). We have had a few very high level conversations for a role as a principal but I have little to no insight into their culture. Any information will be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Apollo's culture has been a topic of significant discussion. While the firm is known for its sharp and bright teams, particularly in areas like distressed investing and credit, the culture can be intense and demanding. Apollo has a reputation for being a "sweatshop," with long hours and a high-pressure environment. However, the Opportunistic Credit Group may offer a slightly different experience depending on the team dynamics and leadership.

Some key points to consider: 1. Culture Variability: Experiences at Apollo can vary widely depending on the specific team and leadership. Some teams are described as supportive and collaborative, while others may have a more cutthroat environment. 2. High Standards: Apollo is known for its rigorous work ethic and high expectations. This is consistent across most groups, including credit-focused teams. 3. Leadership Impact: Since you know a partner there, the culture of the Opportunistic Credit Group may heavily depend on their leadership style. If they are someone you respect and have worked well with, this could be a positive indicator. 4. Reputation in Credit: Apollo's credit teams are highly regarded for their deep industry and credit knowledge. They are known for leveraging their expertise in private equity and lending to execute complex deals.

If you're considering a role as a principal, it might be worth discussing the specific team dynamics, expectations, and work-life balance directly with the partner you know. This could give you a clearer picture of what to expect within the Opportunistic Credit Group.
