Best way to learn asset class

What do you think the best way to learn an asset class is from an investor's perspective? I want to invest in data centers long term. Do you think I would be better off trying to work for a company on the development side doing data centers or working for fund doing acquisitions and/or asset management? I see it as working for a company like vantage or switch vs working for a company like digital bridge. Thank you I appreciate the help.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps to learn about an asset class from an investor's perspective, particularly if you're interested in data centers:

  1. Read Extensively:

    • Dive into industry/scientific journals related to data centers.
    • Read investor letters from funds you respect that invest in data centers.
  2. Develop Your Investing Philosophy:

    • Think deeply about the best way to deploy capital in data centers.
    • Continuously refine your thoughts by comparing your approach with others.
  3. Network and Seek Advice:

    • Reach out to professionals in the data center industry.
    • Have face-to-face conversations to discuss investing strategies and get feedback.
  4. Learn from Different Perspectives:

    • Consider working for a company on the development side (like Vantage or Switch) to understand the operational aspects.
    • Alternatively, working for a fund (like Digital Bridge) can provide insights into acquisitions and asset management.
  5. Participate in Management Meetings:

    • Sit in on as many investment committee meetings as possible to understand different risk-reward approaches.
  6. Practical Experience:

    • Start making calls to management, sell-side analysts, and other industry contacts.
    • Build out financial models, such as DCF, to evaluate data center investments.
  7. Continuous Learning:

    • Be transparent about mistakes and learn from them.
    • Engage in 'lessons learned' exercises to improve your investment decisions.

By following these steps, you can gain a comprehensive understanding of the data center asset class from both an operational and investment perspective.
