Best way to secure interview with 4-5 years of experience

Hey guys,

Just curious to know what the best way to get interview in RE world is when you have 4-5 years of relevant experience. I graduated from semi-target and currently work as an acquisitions associate at a reputable RE development/investment family office, but nepotism is getting unbearable and looking to make a switch into a larger/institutional shop.

I’m getting no interviews using headhunters or applying through typical online route. I used to cold email people for informational interviews, but I think I’m getting to old to do it and have too many contacts in the industry. So I wanted to turn to you guys to see if there is more effective way of securing interviews with my experience. Thanks!

Why are you "too old" to cold email for interviews? Old school networking like this is still the best way to land a new gig IMO, no matter the age. I would recommend stopping spending more than 10 minutes a day on online applications and headhunters--that is a waste of time and you will automatically be one resume among hundreds or thousands. Informational interviews, hand-written follow-up notes, keeping up to speed on deals in your market and pounding the pavement work.

What's the best way to go about a hand written note? Do you mail in a random notebook sheet of paper addressed to the contact in question? Seems like a good idea but I don't know how one would go about this.

Would not go the 'random notebook sheet of paper' route. Go spend money on nice, solid stationary with your name or initials. Well worth the investment.

People will remember you in a different way.

Thanks, that's a good idea. Won't that come off as a bit pretentious? Then again this is finance after all.

I didn’t think about stationary, I like that idea. I’ve been getting pretty nice “Thank You” cards and writing in those and mailing it off after an interview. People seem to appreciate a high quality thank you card, first class stamp, and that I took the time to hand write it.

I’m interested in this too. Seems like he already had a good job, so I’m surprised he’s having a hard time. What else can you do other than cold email?
