Brokerage Conundrum

Would love to get some others thoughts…

Currently working in brokerage. Last year was an incredible year and this year looks poised to top it based on early indications. Last year was a lot of fun, albeit a ton work (I.e. hours). It doesn’t feel as fun this year, and instead feels like more of a grind. As team has grown there are more internal politics which I dislike and am not well-suited for. 
 

Here is the problem. Not really enjoying what I am doing but pretty sure it will be nearly impossible to go somewhere and make the same level of comp.

im sure there are some who will say it’s not all about the money. That’s valid. Would also be curious to hear from others who faced this issue and if there was a way you overcame it by changing perception or reframing the way you looked at work.

work has become such a slog but I feel like a slave to the next bonus season…which is no way to live.

Firstly, many people deal with this issue. Think: 35-40 year old middle manager who realizes they are making more here than elsewhere but actually don’t enjoy the work. This is the golden handcuffs issue unfortunately. I’m not sure if there is a way to reframe your thoughts, but I would say, either A) just think to yourself-this is work. Welcome to the world. Or B) In my opinion, it’s not worth it to be unhappy. If you’re unhappy go find something else. While you may not make as much, you need to be at work 8-12+ hours a day. That’s 1/3 of your day. Money matters. But so does happiness. Try to find something or somewhere you enjoy. 
 

For me personally, I’ve found I would rather be in an environment I enjoy more than a job I enjoy more. I enjoy people more than the work itself. So I focus on culture above the exact work I’m doing. Everyone needs to find what works for them.

This sounds like less of a conundrum and more of an opportunity. You remain where you are, collecting absurd commissions all the while because valuations are through the roof, and you slowly start to look for a new job. When looking for the next job, you make sure it has a comp structure that, while perhaps not quite as good as a record year in brokerage, is still high enough to prevent any dip in lifestyle and both more consistent and fulfilling that what you currently have. 

There are a lot of people out there who hate their job and are only making 40k a year. Try to keep it in perspective.
