Changing industries. Advice needed
Hi All. After being in the industry for my analyst stint I’ve realized that I don’t want to stay in real estate for the long run anymore.
I understand the implications that starting in RE will have on my career - do you think other firms in different industries will look down on my experience in REIB? I’ve always wanted to pursue more of an entrepreneurial path as well, so I might look into that.
Has anyone here made a jump out of RE successfully?

Why not lateral to a non-RE IB group for a year or two? It’ll open a ton of doors imo.
Is it hard to convince other groups to do this because the modelling is so different?
I think it's smoother/easier than you think. Sure, you won't be looking at FFO or AFFO metrics - but the bulk of the skillset will still be transferable. Brush up/prep on the general IB technicals and concepts.
I would network and see how it goes from there. Especially internally, I've seen people make impressive moves at large banks.
I'll definitely look to do this once the market picks back up. Have you made this move ?
I personally haven’t. I know a few people who’ve done it with great success
What do you want to do, if not real estate? I think that's most important before deciding what to do next.
My background and passion has always been in the sciences/life sciences. Through some turns throughout undergrad I ended up in real estate out of school.
Somehow getting to a science based corporate development role would be a long term goal.
