Is it possible to make it as a developer primarily focusing on the finance side or do all developers have a strong understanding of construction? I am looking to work in real estate ib and then transition to either development or real estate pe. I am not very interested in construction or project management but I like the risk and comp potential involved in development. Any advice?

Anyone can be a developer if they have the money. I've seen dentist's and mom and pop land owner's do it, albeit awful projects and wildly over budget.

Development and risk management in a development process is not intuitive and takes a lot of swings at the bat to learn. You can always partner with someone with development/construction/architecture experience. If you are very strong on the finance side focus on that and then partner with someone who is great on the development side, it would be a great partnership with different skillsets.
