Fall CRE Internships---- are they common?

After being on here for a day and going through the trenches on some of these posts, summer internships are completely necessary to get a top level first year analyst job in Capital Markets. I had some poor planning my senior year and got stuck graduating in the summer with little RE experience. Talking to some alums at associate level positions at CBRE, HFF, etc. they recommended getting some internship experience before diving in as a first year analyst. Has anyone else had a similar path/ experience?
