From RE investor/developer to banking back to RE

I started in RE development and investment out of school for a sovereign wealth fund. Worked in Canada, then went to Europe to work on their team there. Got bored, decided to take a shot at banking, realized I had grass is greener’d myself and luckily ended up back in RE with a very large capital partner/co-investor back in Canada.

Happy to field questions about the rollercoaster lateral moves I’ve made and the crossover between IB and RE.

Interesting - what type of bank did you go to (I know energy, but what tier)? Do you think you would've liked it better if you were on a real estate IB team, or was the whole point to get out of real estate?

EB. I got into a funk, thought I needed to try something outside of RE and decided banking was a good idea. I never really put much thought into what I was going to do after 2 years. I really discarded the great opportunities that had been afforded to me in the first place, and was lucky to get a second shot elsewhere after realizing I’d made a mistake.

I don’t think RE banking would do it for me, I prefer being on the buy side and driving various investment/development deals.

General finance/accounting and similarities in the transaction process. I found the two crossover fairly well at a junior level. Not a difficult transition.
