How do I move from Consulting into Real Estate?

Hey all - wanted to know what would be the best way to break into RE from Consulting. I find the industry fascinating and would enjoy working in it.

  1. Would getting a job in asset management be a good way to start in the industry? If so, what roles should I be looking into?

  2. What modeling skills should I be working on?

  3. Are there firms that tend to hire consultants more than others?

Currently working in NYC at a Big 4 in strategy/finance. 5.5 total YOE (2 in Corp fin role at a large healthcare company, 3.5 at big 4).

Also considering doing part-time MBA at NYU (with focus on real estate and finance/banking) - unable to take two years off for a full time program.

Thanks in advance!

Short answer is this is definitely doable; get linkedin premium and talk to everyone you can at every firm you're interested in, if only to get their advice and access to their relationships. Just get on the phone with as many people as possible and make a genuine ask for advice/help breaking in and most people will be open to that. Would not recommend just cold applying for roles in your situation without talking to someone first, anyone who reviews your resume would be super confused without context.

Issue is that CRE skillset is very specific so you probably will take a step back in title from where you are now. AM/bank lending/family office are probably all good places to look, you could probably swing AM/PM roles at REPE firms too. Probably wouldn't expect acquisitions roles at REPE, but crazier things have happened.
