How do you know what companies/teams/individuals are the "best" in the market

I've ran into a lot of comments on here where someone is asking should they work for Company X vs Company Z and the response is always that it's "market" or "team" dependent. As a college student trying to expand my network, how do I know the reputation or deal flow of a certain team/individual? Is using http://costarpowerbrokers.com/ or "Business Journal Heavy Hitter Awards" a good approach?

There’s usually rankings based on SF developed for developers, dollars closed for brokers, equity raised for PE firms, units developed for multifamily firms, etc

The answer is incredibly subjective, as the largest firm is not always the best for a given individual. It’s important to evaluate not only comp but culture, how the work appeals to you, etc

There are a few shops that anyone in here will nut over via the forum without knowing what it’s like to work at said firm. Ask questions and in time you’ll understand what reputation each of these shops really has.
