How far in advance should one start the relocation process?
How far in advance would one recommend networking/setting up discussions for relocating to a totally different city? Networking within a city/looking for a new job is one thing, but logistically harder when you're talking about a move to a new city. Aside from the roles that are 'open to relocation', how far out would you start reaching out/looking at job postings in future city of residence? The obvious answer is use recruiters, but sometimes I feel like they wouldn't take you as serious if you're too far out and would focus on other candidates that are local and can skip out at lunch for a quick interview vs. flying/Amtrak.
Any first hand experience would be great.
Are you moving to a specific city or are you open to multiple cities?
If it is to one specific city, then the easiest way to handle things is to call a bunch of recruiters, see what is available and then to give them specific dates that you will be in town to meet with people.
If you are open to multiple places then call a bunch of recruiters and they will fly you in if they want to meet with you.
I've moved 2x (TX to NC, NC to NYC). During all of the national job searches I've undertaken, I've been flown out to meet with people (company expense), after getting throigh phone/Skype interviews. That includes being flown to LA 2x, once to Chicago and 2x to Dallas plus the interviews for the jobs I've actually accepted in NYC and NC.
NYC, but would also be open to a no-brainer role in another awesome city if it came about.
It'd be nice to have the luxury of interview travel paid for, would certainly make it easier. I guess the original question still stands though, how far in advance. I guess consider future apartment leases expiring, moving time table, finding a place to live. All that takes time. Sure, it could happen in less than a month, but unlikely.
