How much / when to buy a house?…

What analyses / statistics do you look at to determine whether to buy a house for your own?

Let’s say you have worked for a few years in high finance and now decided to buy a house, how do you determine if this is the right price and in generally how do you know the market will be up or down? Will you build a model yourself?

AND do you think working in say real estate investment banking / hedge fund / asset management / equity research helps you make better house buying decision?

Would be interesting to heat perspectives on this as I assume there are many real estate experts on this forum and many of them will buy / have bought a house sometime in their life
