I received a phone screen invitation for the JLL - Analyst, Underwriting position. What questions should I expect?
Hey Everyone,
As the title states, I received a request for a phone screen at JLL. What are the typical questions I should expect?
Note: I’m looking to pivot into Real Estate, ideally Acquisitions/Development/Asset Management, as an analyst and have 0 background in the industry.
Very basic questions like: what is your background? why are you interested in real estate? what specifically are you interested in within real estate? Why jll? Why [insert city]? And then maybe some lame behavioral questions like tell me about a time that you failed or what are your greatest weaknesses.
An initial phone screen at any of the large RE shops will be conducted by HR representative who is essentially confirming what's on your resume. They'll ask for some dialogue about why RE, why their group, etc. and then will want to confirm what you're looking for (both compensation and experience-wise) somewhat lines up with what they are offering. Had this today. More specific questions will come up in following interviews should you be a desirable candidate for them, but don't sweat the first one too much. Just be ready to talk about your background and interest in the position.
Good luck!
Thanks for the detailed response. I’m looking to pivot into the CRE industry, particularly Acquisitions, Development, or Asset Management as an analyst. Do you think this role would benefit me down the line? I don’t hold a B.S. in Real Estate or Finance so this is all new to me.
Yes. This role would be a way for you to get your foot in the door. Spend a year+ doing whatever you get hired to do, learn it, master it, then you will be able to parlay that experience elsewhere.
I did one of these for the same role a couple years ago. Don’t expect any technical questions, just go over your resume and talk about your interest in real estate and why this role fits what you’re looking for.
I had no idea what this role entailed when I applied and when I did the screen interview. I wanted to be on the capital markets side in which I eventually worked for a debt and equity placement group at a competitor. I thought the underwriting position was the same as the analyst in D/E with JLL’s predecessor HFF. If you want to go into acquisitions, asset management, development I would suggest you look for a capital markets analyst position as you will have a much higher chance getting to your end goal at a reputable firm with that experience.
