Interested in learning about CMBS B-Piece Buyer Groups

Really curious about cmbs buyers. I work in debt origination and want to learn more about the groups that buy the securitized pools of loans. Are the individuals in these b-piece buyer shops comprised of former CRE guys or are they former IB guys with bond / fixed income backgrounds? Say I wanted to get a analyst job at a b-piece buyer shop, would my background in debt origination be relevant or does it come down to bond / fixed income experience and less concerned with CRE valuation / capital markets experience.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about CMBS B-Piece Buyer Groups:

  1. Backgrounds of Individuals in B-Piece Buyer Shops:

    • The individuals in these shops can come from various backgrounds. While some may have experience in Commercial Real Estate (CRE), others might come from Investment Banking (IB) with a focus on bond or fixed income.
    • Your background in debt origination could be relevant, especially if you have strong modeling skills and experience with complex business plans and timelines.
  2. Relevance of Debt Origination Experience:

    • Your experience in debt origination is valuable and can be relevant for a role at a B-Piece buyer shop. The skills you have developed in this area, such as strong modeling skills and exposure to various asset classes, can be beneficial.
    • However, having some knowledge or experience in bond/fixed income could also be advantageous, as these roles often require an understanding of both CRE valuation and capital markets.
  3. Skills and Experience:

    • Strong modeling skills and experience with diverse business plans and timelines are crucial.
    • While direct experience with Argus might not be mandatory, having some exposure or taking introductory courses can be helpful.
    • A blend of CRE valuation and capital markets experience is often preferred, but your debt origination background can provide a solid foundation.

In summary, your background in debt origination is relevant and can be a strong asset when seeking an analyst job at a B-Piece buyer shop. It would be beneficial to highlight your modeling skills and any exposure to capital markets to strengthen your application.
