Internal Capital Markets Role - Carry?

Do capital markets professionals at REPE firms get any carry? I know it’s firm dependent but I’m curious if this is a thing.

Referring to the guys at principal shops that procure/negotiate debt for acquisitions, developments, etc..

Ah, the age-old question of carry in the world of high finance! Based on the most helpful WSO content, carry is typically associated with the investment side of the business, particularly those directly involved with the equity investments and deal-making. However, as you rightly mentioned, it can be firm dependent.

For capital markets professionals within REPE firms, carry might not be as common as it is for those in acquisitions or direct investment roles. The capital markets team usually focuses on procuring and negotiating debt, which is a bit different from the equity side where carry is more prevalent.

But don't lose hope! In some cases, especially at smaller or more integrated firms, there might be a chance for capital markets professionals to get a slice of the carry pie. It often comes down to the firm's structure and the individual's role in the transaction or the overall success of the firm.

If you're eyeing that sweet carry potential, it's wise to have a candid conversation with your firm's leadership or to dig into the compensation details during your interview process. Remember, in the jungle of REPE, the more you know about a firm's compensation structure, the better you can navigate your career path. Keep swinging through those financial vines, and you might just land in a spot with some carry to grab onto!
