Is CRE generally considered a lucrative field? Which sector (i.e. Development, Investment Sales, REITS) makes the most money?

Property Management is quite lucrative. Probably most desired role in CRE. You should do some research on it.
Its not a joke. Certain folks who end up at the top pull in couple hundred Gs a year and mort dont even have college degree. Granted not all will end up there but still.

Shorting CRE may be the most lucrative area in CRE right now

I was half joking, I don't have particular expertise in commercial real estate. The RE folks here on WSO are a strong bunch, they'll know a lot more than me.
But the half of me that wasn't joking: I've heard a good number of smart investors say recently that its been overbuilt for the last decade and that long-term WFH trends are going to hit office demand really hard, with retail then suffering spillover effects.
I think Corona is going to kill WFH. Nobody is more productive working from home.
It was lucrative once, not anymore.
