  • Do research on the firm (e.g., recent / past deals, JBG's history)
  • Have a good grasp of various commercial real estate property types and national trends, as well as trends in the D.C /DMV area (if I am not mistaken, all of the firm's investments in this part of the country)
  • Know your technicals (e.g., how a DCF works, how to get to a cap rate, etc.)
  • brainteasers (can't post links, so google this without quotes "itinterview awardspace brainteaser" for practice)
  • Have a story (why real estate, why investments vs. other areas of real estate, why JBG, etc.)

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Touching on what Leon Sandcastle said in regards to some of their big deals think Woodley, Louis at 14th, 77 H, the District. They sold Tech World Plaza earlier this year. Central Place in Rosslyn, big mixed-use development that is taking off following CEB signing a 300K sf lease a few months back. They have a development site right across from 77 H (think it is 801 New Jersey). This is just what I can think of off the top of my head. The majority of their deals are in the DMV area.

They were named one of the top funds recently. http://www.propertyfundsworld.com/2014/09/05/209559/prequin-constructs-…

I'd say the biggest thing to have down for the phone interview is why real estate and why you are the right person for JBG. Based on my experience, they are not going to get into technicals on the phone as it is likely a HR person (i could be wrong).

Good luck

Thank you for all the answers. I really appreciate them. My interview is actually with 2 analysts so I am probably going to be studying some technicals as well.

I heard from multiple people that they don't care if you know or are interested in real estate and that its primarily fit and ridiculous technical questions. Please give some feedback on the interview.

Yep. They reached out to me months after I applied and asked if I still had any interest in the position. Told them sure and asked if they could resend me the job description/details since it was no longer on the site. They told me I didn't need to worry about it, it would just be a quick phone interview and they just wanted to get a feel for what I was working on and why I was interested in JBG... Ended up being over an hour and probably 75% technical and strange brain teasers.
