JP Morgan CRE Question
Hi Monkeys - I have a question about how JP Morgan’s CRE team is set up. Like every bank, there are a bunch of different teams but theirs seems to differ as they have JP Asset Management and Private Bank. Does the wider CRE group (non-CMBS) touch that as well or is the high yield JP AM group on a separate planet from the typical core BS lending team.
I hope my question makes sense. I work at another BB in CRE BS lending but want to try the higher yield side of things and like working at a bank.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, JP Morgan's Commercial Real Estate (CRE) setup is indeed divided across different divisions, which can make it a bit complex to navigate. Here's a breakdown:
Commercial Bank CRE Team: This team primarily focuses on balance sheet lending, which includes traditional income-producing real estate loans. It's more core and lower-yield compared to other areas.
Asset Management CRE (JPAM): This is under JP Morgan Asset Management and operates more like a real estate investment manager. They focus on higher-yield strategies, such as opportunistic and value-add investments, and are more aligned with institutional real estate investing.
Private Bank CRE: This team caters to high-net-worth individuals and families, often structuring bespoke real estate investments or financing solutions. It’s more relationship-driven and tailored.
To answer your question, the wider CRE group (non-CMBS) typically does not overlap much with the high-yield JPAM group. The JPAM group operates more like a separate entity with a focus on institutional-grade investments and strategies, while the core balance sheet lending team in the commercial bank is more traditional in its approach.
If you're looking to transition to the higher-yield side, targeting roles within JPAM or similar groups at other firms would be the way to go. Your background in CRE BS lending could be a strong foundation, but you might need to demonstrate familiarity with higher-yield strategies and investment underwriting to make the switch.
