Making Transition From Pre-Construction At GC/CM To Real Estate Development?

Currently working at a GC/CM in Pre-Construction (Estimating/Purchasing). Been here for a few years but really have my eye towards working in more of a development type role. I wanted some direction on how long I should wait to try and make the jump as I hear oftentimes it is easy to get pigeonholed into a certain role. What would be the smoothest way to jump into the other side?

I don't think you need to wait if you have already been working in this role for a few years. You could network with your clients, easiest route generally. Otherwise, apply and network around. May be worth doing some modeling and/or other real estate courses to make yourself more marketable. If you really want to go all in, you could do a MSRE/D as a transition point, many from the GC/CM world use it for making the transition.

Several of the associates and higher started in the GC/CM world, so this is doable but takes work.
