Mega fund vs entrepreneurial type (lean) REPE/Development/Investment shops

What are some of your thoughts on the 2 as far as opportunity/responsibility, career advancement, salary.  Currently in a Transactions role doing modeling and deal structure for MF projects looking to jump to investment side of RE.  If the goal is to one day start your own shop wouldn't getting into a more entrepreneurial/lean shop in order to get experience in all aspects of a deal be the way to go?  Interested in others perspective on this.  Thanks.
