MSRE Directly out of UG?

I'm currently a junior at a non-target and would love to get some feedback on the efficacy of getting an MSRE out of UG.

I know this is an unorthodox (and typically counterproductive) approach, so the reasons I'm considering doing this are: 1) I'm 24. I worked for two years after high school before starting college. 2) I still don't have anything lined up for this summer. I came very close w/ a couple of BB REIB groups and MFs, but I made the mistake of not applying to companies less prestigious than those and now it looks pretty bleak.

I worked at a development firm last summer and am sure that I would get a good letter of recommendation from the managing principals there and my academic resume is bullet-proof, but I'm not familiar enough with how admissions work at the top MSREs to know how much I would get penalized (or not considered at all) for hot having worked FT before.

To sum it up, (a) does it make sense to do MSRE out of UG given my thought process and (b) assuming my academic record is bullet-proof, can I even get in w/out FT?

Typically the rationale for not going straight from UG to MSRE/MRED programs, which I am typically an outspoken proponent of, is because of a diminished knowledge base going into the program and diminished job prospects as a result. I give this advice primarily because of my experience with my own MSRE/MRED class. It is not universal advice, and there are definitely options such as going part time straight out of UG while also working so you get the best of both worlds, but before all of that though, you need to consider two things:

  1. Don't rush into decisions. You're a junior heading into your junior to senior summer panicked because you don't have an internship. First of all, you still have time to get an internship. A lot of my masters classmates didn't lock theirs down until late April. You might be past the deadline for the big corporate gigs, but there are tons of smaller people who may need an intern that you can reach out to.

  2. You can also still get a job in real estate when you graduate without going straight into a MSRE/MRED, with or without an internship this summer. Sure, keep graduate school as an option, and maybe even apply, but you're more than a year out from having to panic and a year and a half from when you would start. That is all the time in the world to network your ass off and find something.

I went in 6 months out of undergrad. I probably would have gotten more out of the program if I had actual work experience and/or was working through the entirety of it. I did however score a job at a family office through someone I met at school about half way through the program which beats being unemployed or working at a job where I’m not a professional investor so it wa definitely worth the investment.

So my advice is to hold off until you have some experience unless you don’t have other options.
