Question is in the title, have you ever had kicking tires with other firms get back to your current firm and what are some best practices?

Career Resources
It is always a concern, not much you can do about it tbh. I was ratted out by a firm I interviewed with.
.
I used to worry about stuff like this early in my career so I get where you're coming from with this question. Unless you're interviewing with your MD's best friends shop you have nothing to worry about. Are there douchebags that may go out of their way to fuck your shit up? Of course, but it's really rare IMO. Senior folks have 100 other things to worry about than someone else's analyst trying to jump ship lol.
In fact what I learned that I wish I knew beforehand, is that if you have a good relationship with your boss on the sellside and you, for example want to try a stint on the buyside, he might even help you make the transition. Just use your best judgment but don't worry too much about people trying to ruin your life for no reason while you're shopping around.
True on them helping you, but I would say this is after a few years and you know them well. Darcys team at CBRE literally told me she would help juniors land roles but again after a few years there and they had done well.
"Hey Frank! How are the kids? Uh huh. Nice. So yeah I am just calling because your analyst just applied to the role we have open...yea"
I would die
