Parking Conversion
Lot of talk about autonomous vehicles (ride sharing, public transportation, regulation, etc) making parking garages obsolete. I have read about a number of projects where the developer is building out the garage in a way to accommodate conversion to a different use in the future. From a construction perspective, what are they doing differently to make this possible? Any estimates on additional cost vs. constructing the garage in the traditional manner? Also, looking at an existing parking garage (or an existing building with levels of above-grade parking) what factors would impact the ability to convert to a different use (office/residential)? I assume clear height would be a big one, but I'm hoping that a construction and/or development expert can weigh in.
