Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about Canadian Pension Funds like PSP, CPPIB, and QuadReal, particularly for VP-level roles in Europe:

Hours and Work Flexibility

  • Office Requirement: HR's statement about being in the office 5 days a week aligns with the general expectation at Canadian pension funds. They tend to have a more traditional approach to work arrangements, especially in international offices like London.
  • Work-Life Balance: Canadian pension funds are generally known for offering better work-life balance compared to traditional private equity or investment banking roles. However, this can vary by team and location. While the culture is less intense than at some private equity firms, the requirement to be in the office may limit flexibility like leaving early and logging back in from home.

Compensation

  • Base Salary: VP-level roles at Canadian pension funds are competitive but may not match the total compensation of similar roles at private equity firms. Compensation is typically structured with a solid base salary and a performance-based bonus.
  • Bonus Structure: Bonuses are tied to group and fund performance, often with a cap. For example, PSP explicitly structures bonuses as a multiplier of the base salary, and carry is not offered at these funds.
  • Comparison to PE: While the base salary might be attractive, the lack of carry and capped bonuses mean total comp is generally lower than at private equity firms of similar size.

Culture

  • General Culture: Canadian pension funds are often praised for their collaborative and professional culture. They emphasize internal mobility and provide opportunities to work on large, global deals.
  • Politics: Some funds, like PSP, are noted for being highly political, which can impact the work environment and career progression.
  • Team Dynamics: The quality of senior professionals and the level of autonomy in deal-making can vary. For example, CPPIB is known for conducting most of its diligence in-house, while others may rely more on external partners.

Key Considerations

  • Promotion Opportunities: Canadian pension funds often have clearer paths to promotion compared to private equity firms, especially as they continue to grow their headcount.
  • Work Style: The focus is often on fund investments and co-investments rather than control deals, which may appeal to those looking for a less aggressive deal-making environment.

If you value stability, a collaborative culture, and a better work-life balance, a VP role at a Canadian pension fund in London could be a great fit. However, if maximizing total compensation or working on control deals is a priority, private equity might be more aligned with your goals.
