RE Dev-focused Reads?
My quarantine has been spent largely daydreaming of starting my own dev company - I’ve been indulging this thought by reading about how Stephen Ross, Gerald Hines, Sam Zell, Tishman & Speyer etc started their empires. Would love to hear suggestions for influential biographical reads on developers in this thread.
It’s also interesting to dig into strong local market players that can fly under the radar for those outside the market. Rockrose Dev in NYC is an example of this - can anyone suggest successful dev companies to study that were started in and are focused primarily on a single market?
Other People’s Money isn’t directly related to dev but it’s about Tishman and Blackrock’s acq of Stuy Town, and how the deal fell apart. There’s a bio on Trammell Crow that I’ve been meaning to read. That might be worth a read.
I enjoyed the Trammel Crow Bio
Larry Silverstein's story is amazing The Rechlers are a good example (RXR) Jorge Perez in Miami
There is a book called "Making it in Real Estate: Starting out as a Developer" by John McNellis. It looks pretty good - has anyone here read it?
The author gives his story of starting a development company in the Mid-80s and is supposed to be a primer on the fundamentals of running a development company. I think I will be giving this a read.
