RE IB recruiting on the west coast.

Suppose I have a boutique IB internship lined up my sophomore summer - I'm not particularly worried about landing something BB or MM IB eventually. However, my passion is in real estate, and I seriously can't find anything to do with specialized recruiting for BB banks' real estate coverage groups (not CBRE/JLL etc .brokerage capital market groups, as I'll be applying to them anyway).

I have long-standing work exp. in residential RE, and I'm confident I can come across as enthusiastic for the real estate industry in particular. I just can't find an angle of entry at all in OCR. I understand west coast IB offices are small to begin with, and RE is a proportionately lean service line. Do I have to start looking towards the other coast to break in?

You want to do real estate investment banking? Try (i.e. do, because it is fairly easy) networking with people from Eastdil Secured, it's right in Santa Monica. Aside from that, "real estate" is extremely broad - what do you want to do? Structure deals? Raise money? Develop real estate? Work as a property manager at a shady apartment building in Van Nuys? Which is it?

Eastdil is on the list, but it fits into the category of capital markets teams that I will apply for anyway. I have a stronger and more specific desire to begin my real estate career from a macro level of finance - industry specific coverage of REITs, lodging, leisure etc. Corporation rather than asset-level. It's just investment banking in the traditional WSO-represented sense but for real estate related companies as opposed to TMT, FIG etc. I figured have the rest of my life to eventually filter down to dealing with individual assets in acquisitions/development. Thanks for the response.
